Calling all local artists!
 

The Center for Black Studies Research at UCSB is hosting a wall art competition with the goal of showcasing work by local talent in its newly renovated space. The winning wall art will be displayed in our center to represent the Black Diaspora.

Contest Rules and Guidelines

Eligibility

All currently enrolled UCSB graduate and undergraduate students, students in Santa Barbara and Goleta K–12 schools, and community members from Santa Barbara and Goleta are eligible to submit their wall art for consideration. Graduate and undergraduate students from any and all departments are encouraged to enter.

Themes

The winning entry should artistically reflect the mission and focus of the Center for Black Studies Research, which is to advance research of, by, and for Black populations in the United States and beyond. Artwork should engage with one of the following themes:

  • The Black Diaspora
  • The Black Diaspora in Science, Technology, Math, and Engineering

 Selection

All submissions will be reviewed by the CBSR’s art competition committee, which will select one winner from each competition level: graduate, undergraduate, K–12 schools, and community member.

Prize

The winner in each category will receive the following from the Center for Black Studies Research:

  • Graduate student: $300
  • Undergraduate student: $200
  • Community member: $150
  • K–12 student: $50

How to Enter

Send the following to the Center for Black Studies Research at centerbsr@gmail.com:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • Your phone number
  • Your home department (What is your major?)
  • Academic or community identification (graduate, undergraduate, K–12 student, or community member)
  • Your year or grade, if a student (first grade, first year, etc.)
  • A brief explanation or commentary on your wall art (about 100 words)
  • Medium, if known (oils, watercolor, mixed media, etc.)
  • A digital photo of your wall art (size of artwork should not be more than 30" x 40")

By submitting a contest entry you certify that the submission is your original work, has not been copied from others, and does not violate the intellectual property rights of any other person or entity.

Deadline for submissions and completion of artwork: December 31, 2018

The winners from each category will present their artwork at the Center for Black Studies Open House, January 28, 2019.

Intellectual Property Rights

Any and all intellectual property rights of the winning entry will be transferred to the Center for Black Studies Research on the date of the official announcement of the winner in each category. The CBSR will have the right to edit, adapt, and modify the winning entry and to use it in any manner CBSR deems appropriate. The winning art piece will become property of CBSR, but the creator can use an image of it in their portfolio as an example of their work.
